Radio Telemetry on steel works
30 January 2007Powelectrics have recently deployed several Versanet radio telemetry systems on a steel works. As part of the steel making process the molten steel is held in very large vessells and the various additions are made.
The temperature at the surface of the vessell is crucial to quality so by using 20 thermocouples placed around the surface of the vessell to measure the temperature the process can can be cooled and heated accordingly.
However, the vessells rotate about a horizontal axis to present the opening for charging (see photo below of charging the vessell), and the control room is some distance from the vessell.

By installing the radio telemetry the signals can be tramsitted wirelessly across the open area to a receiver unit. The temperature signals are then interfaced by Modbus to the PLC and SCADA systems.
